Osku Palermaa overtakes lead in 2011 European Bowling Tour Men's Rankings

 

Three-time European Bowling Tour men's ranking champion Osku Palermaa (2007-09, pictured left) of Finland captured his ninth career EBT title and the first since February 2010 in the 2nd Track Dream-Bowl Palace Open Sunday at Dream Bowl Palace in Munich, Germany.

Besides the 10.000 Euro top prize, the two-hander received 100 ranking points for winning the EBT Silver event en route to leap from fourth to first place in the EBT men's ranking. After the sixth tournament of the 2011 EBT season, Palermaa has 334 total ranking points.

Previous leader Thomas Larsen (right), Denmark, slipped to second place with 308 pints after finishing 27th in the DBPO and 24th in the men's rankings, worth 16 points. Four-time EBT ranking champion Gery Verbruggen, Belgium (2000-03) and Syafiq Ridhwan, Malaysia, did not compete in Munich and fell one spot to third and fourth place with 262 and 250, respectively.

Three-time EBT ranking champion Paul Moor, overtook reigning ranking champion Dominic Barrett thanks to a third-place finish with 245 points, good for fifth place in the 2011 rankings. Barrett, who was injured in an accident during the Saudi Arabia International, did not compete.

On the women's side, Carolyn Dorin-Ballard (left), United States, remained atop the leaderboard with 320 ranking points. The Team USA member did not participate in the DBPO.

Mai Ginge Jensen (right), Denmark, finished third in the women's rankings (70 points) and 22nd overall to leap from fourth to second place with 287 points. Two-time World Champion Clara Juliana Guerrero, Colombia, who has won the EBT Platinum Brunswick Euro Challenge, slipped to third place with 278 points.

World Games champion Krista Pöllänen, Finland, fell to fourth place with 275 points. Rounding out the top five is reigning women's ranking champion Nina Flack, Sweden, with 205 points. Both Pöllänen and Flack did not compete in Munich.

Two-time EBT women's rankiung winner and three-time EBT Masters winner Kamilla Kjeldsen, Denamrk, led the rankings in Munich and received 100 ranking points, her first points of the season, to move into 17th place.

Since the Viborg International in Denmark has been cancelled, the 2011 European Bowling Tour features 21 tournaments in 17 countries, two Platinum, six Gold, seven Silver and six Satellite tournaments. The total prize fund of the 2011 Tour will exceed 1 million Euro.

2011 EBT champions, men's and women's ranking winners and schedule

The top 50 men and the top 50 women in each tournament of the European Bowling Tour cash ranking points no matter from which country or World Tenpin Bowling Association Zone (Europe, Asia, America) he or she comes.

The winner of a Platinum tournament receives 250 ranking points, the winner of a Gold tournament gets 150, the winner of a Silver tournament such as the Track Dream-Bowl Palace Open earns 100, and the winner of a Satellite tournament gets 50 ranking points.

The top 16 men and the top 16 women in the EBT ranking will qualify for the 2012 EBT Masters to be held in conjunction with the 3rd Dream Bowl Palace Open in Unterföhring near Munich, Germany April 30 and May 1, 2012.

The 2011 European Bowling Tour will be in Ljubljana, Slovenia, this week for the 5th Qubica/AMF Open 2011 to be held at Bowling Center Gladiator in Ljubljana, Slovenia from April 5-10. Immediately following the touranemt ist he 4th EBT Masters.

Jason Couch claims March Bowler of the Month

Jason Couch (pictured), Clermont, Florida, has been named the March 2011 Kegel Bowler of the Month by the Bowling Writers Association of America.

Couch captured the PBA Mark Roth Plastic Ball Championship, defeating Parker Bohn III, Jackson, New Jersey, in the title match, 219-175. The win is his 16th career PBA title and first since January 2007. After the 2006-07 season, the three-time Tournament of Champions winner faced knee surgery knocking him out of the 2007-08 season.

"It's a big monkey off my back to win. I'm very happy to see that my hard work has paid off and that my body is keeping up with me," Couch said after clutching the trophy.

The 1992 PBA Rookie of the Year took the lead after the 14-game qualifying round and stayed in the top 4 through the remainder of the tournament. He qualified as the top seed in the four-man stepladder TV finals.

Others receiving votes were Chris Loschetter, winner of the 8th Kuwait International Open, Randy Weiss, top 3 finalist in the PBA Dick Weber playoffs, Dick Allen, also a top 3 finalist in the PBA Dick Weber Playoffs and Clara Guerrero, Colombia, winner of the European Bowling Tour's Brunswick Euro Challenge.

Remy Ong wins back-to-back Kingdom International Open titles

(left), UAE, 475-390. Ong pocketed $25,000 for the victory while Al-Hassan received $13,000.

The Singaporean national team member, who earned a bye for the semis after finishing fifth in qualifying, remained undefeated in the double-elimination match play finals for the second consecutive year winning four straight matches on his way to the title match.

In the opening Round of 16, Ong edged Tim Mack (right), United States by mere two pins, 403-401 and went on to defeat Josh Blanchard, United States, in the first round of the winners bracket, 466-382.

Top seeded Sean Rash (left), was the third consecutive U.S. bowler, who was sent to the losers bracket as Ong topped the four-time PBA champion, 439421. In the match between the two remaining undefeated players, Ong topped Kuwait's Khaled Al-Dubyyan (below right), 420-389, to advance to the title match against the winner of the losers bracket.

Al-Hassam had a bye in the Round of 16 as his opponent, Dominic Barrett of England, had to withdraw after being injured in a quad-bike accident the night before.

The winner of the 2nd Kingdom International Open remained in the winners bracket after a 406-393 win over World Games champ Manuel Otalora, of Colombia, before he was sent to the losers bracket by Al-Dubyyan, 469-428.

The UAE bowler eliminated Rash, 449-377, and then took revenge against Al-Dubyyan to advance to the title match, 439-389.

Al-Dubyyan earned $8,000 for third place, Rash got $5,000 for fourth and England's Paul Moor pocketed $4,000 for fifth place.

The fifth Kingdom International Championship was open to male bowlers only and drew mere 72 players from 15 countries - Afghanistan, Australia, Bahrain, Colombia, England, Finland, Indonesia, Jordan, Kuwait, Philippines, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, UAE and the United States. The tournament offered total prize fund of $113,200.

Qualifying (52 three-game squads) ran from March 24 through 18 and was concluded by the Desperado Squad. Each player must bowl at least three qualifying squads.

A total of 34 players advanced to the finals on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 29 and 30: The top 27 qualifiers with the highest nine-game total (best three three-game series) plus the top two of the Desperado Squad (places 28-29), the next three Saudi Arabian bowlers outside the cut (places 20-32) and two players from a local tournament (places 33-34).

The top five players plus the best Saudi, seeded sixth, earned one bye and advanced to the Round of 16. The other 28 players bowled eight games to cut to the top 10 who joined the top 6 qualifiers in double-elimination match play.<

In order to advance through the brackets, each player must post two-game totals higher than his opponent. Losers were forced to fight through the loser's bracket to earn a spot in the title match.

England's Dominic Barrett injured in a car accident in Saudi Arabia

Joan Mack, mother of international star Tim Mack, has informed Bowlingdigital that European champion Dominic Barrett (pictured) of England as well as two other middle eastern bowlers were injured in a four-wheeler accident last night in Saudi Arabia.

A traditional party in the desert is an annual event at the 5th Kingdom International Open to be held from March 24-30, 2011 at Universal Bowling Center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Tim Mack was one of the first on the accident scene and helped remove the car from the injured. He also went to the hospital to see the guys and reported that Barrett, who was seeded third in today's double-elimination finals, has seven broken ribs and a broken left clavical. His eye was swollen shut however cat scans show everything about the head and eye seems to be ok. He is projected to be in the hospital for 3 days.

The second bowler, most probably Mohammed Al-Rajeebah from Kuwait, has a broken femur and will be in the hospital for at least ten days. We have currently no information about the third bowler taken to the hospital. Perhaps he was treated and released.

Midwest Region veteran Lennie Boresch Jr. realizes a dream in PBA Dick Weber Playoffs

After years of success on the Professional Bowlers Association Regional Tour, long-time PBA Midwest Region star Lennie Boresch Jr. (pictured) of Kenosha, Wis., will make his national television debut Sunday when the Lucas Oil Regional Championships round of the Dick Weber PBA Playoffs airs on ESPN Sunday at 1 p.m. Eastern.

Boresch, who earned his first Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour exemption by finishing fourth in the 2010 PBA Regional Players Invitational, has won 24 titles at the regional level and was the 1997 and '98 PBA Midwest Region Player of the Year.

The 48-year-old pro shop operator and father of two teenagers will compete in the West/Northwest Region finals in the Lucas Oil Regional Championships round at Woodland Bowl, bowling a one-game match against 13-time PBA Tour titlist Chris Barnes (below left) and two-time Tour and 10-time regional titlist Lonnie Waliczek (below right).

The winner of the three-player match – along with the Midwest and Southwest Region winners – will advance to the Conference Championship round which airs on ESPN on Sunday, April 10, at 1 p.m. Eastern.

The unique PBA Playoffs format featured six independent regional groups bowling elimination rounds within their respective regions (North, South, East, Southeast, Southwest, Midwest and West/Northwest).

A total of 108 PBA members who qualified through their respective Regional programs, along with the top 72 players on the 2010-11 Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour competition points list were seeded into the event. Boresch, who finished 48th on the points list, was seeded into the West/Northwest Region for the opening round of the Playoffs.

A series of elimination rounds culled the starting field to three survivors in each of the six regions. Steve Jaros (left; East), Randy Weiss (right; South) and Dick Allen (below left; Central) won their respective regional titles in the Go RVing Regional Championship round to advance to the Conference Championships.

The three Conference Championship survivors will return to Woodland Bowl on Sunday, April 17, to bowl for the $50,000 first prize in the live ESPN finale at 1 p.m. Eastern. The Dick Weber PBA Playoffs is the final event of the PBA Tour's 2010-11 season.

"It's a great format and it was a lot of fun," Boresch said of the PBA Playoffs. "With the elimination format your odds are better to make the TV show because you just have to make sure you bowled well enough within your division and not be one of the bottom few players to be eliminated. It's not like a normal Tour event where you have to be in the top five out of however many are entered in the entire tournament to make the TV show.<
"But, you also still had to bowl a lot of games during the week, so you weren't going luck into anything."

After struggling during the season (his previous best finish was 18th in the Brunswick Pro Bowling Cheetah Championship at the PBA World Series of Bowling in October), making the Playoffs regional finals fulfilled one of Boresch's career goals of making a Tour telecast.

"It was a dream come true to make a TV show," said Boresch, who is also a three-time USBC Open Championships titlist. "It wasn't looking good the way the season was going, but it finally happened and it has kind of made the whole season worthwhile."

Boresch has been a PBA member since 1980 and toured briefly in the 1982 and '83 seasons. Ironically, his best Tour finishes came later on when he bowled only occasionally in Tour events. He finished fifth in the 1998 Showboat Invitational and sixth in the 1989 USBC Masters.

After opening a pro shop in '83, getting married shortly thereafter and starting a family, it became apparent that PBA's regional program was going to be the best fit for his professional career.

"Being able to compete in regionals, have a business and a family is really the best of all worlds because I'm still able to enjoy the sport competitively by competing in the majors and a tournament like the Playoffs," Boresch added.

Besides the West/Northwest Region finals, the Lucas Oil Regional round will feature the finals in the Midwest (Jack Jurek, left, Wes Malott, Bill O'Neill) and Southwest (Brad Angelo, Dino Castillo, Jason Belmonte, right) Regions.

The Conference Championships telecast on Sunday, April 10 at 1 p.m. Eastern will include the East Region winner (Jaros) against the South (Weiss), the Central (Allen) vs. the Midwest winner, and the Southwest vs. the West/Northwest winner.

Hosted at the Intercontinental The Barclay in Manhattan from March 23-24, the sold out event highlighted brands that serve as leaders in providing unparalleled experiences to their customers.

As part of a panel on "Implementing Customer Experience Strategies," Johnson addressed the evolution of the bowling industry that has helped drive four years of consecutive growth in the industry; securing bowling's ranking as the #1 participatory sport in the country.

During the prestigious two day event, the BPAA and Johnson were showcased among such leading brands as Ritz-Carlton, GE, Dow Jones, Victoria's Secret, Pitney Bowes, JD Power & Associates, 1-800-FLOWERS.COM and Celebrity Cruises, among others.

Brunswick Bowling & Billiards president Warren N. Hardie to retire

Brunswick Corporation (NYSE: BC) today announced that Warren N. Hardie (pictured), president – Brunswick Bowling & Billiards, has decided to retire May 1, 2011. Hardie has served in his present capacity since February 2006.

He joined Brunswick in 1997 as senior vice president – Brunswick Indoor Recreation Group, and in 1998 was named as president – Bowling Retail, where he was responsible for the management and performance of more than 100 Brunswick-owned and operated bowling centers around the world.

"Warren has made significant contributions to our bowling retail, bowling products and billiards businesses," stated Brunswick Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Dustan E. McCoy. "We will miss his insight and experience in many areas."

Following Hardie's retirement, Brunswick Bowling & Billiards will report to Peter B. Hamilton, who will continue to serve as Brunswick's senior vice president and chief financial officer.

2011 QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup to be held in Johannesburg, South Africa

John Walker (pictured right), CEO and President of QubicaAMF, has announced that 47th QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup will be held from Nov. 30 through Dec. 7, 2011 at Northcliff Bowling Center in Johannesburg, South Africa. This is the second time after 1993 that South Africa will host the BWC.

Bowling’s U.S. Women’s Open offers $200.000 prize fund

TV Finals will be staged June 30 at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium

 

The $200.000 Bowling’s U.S. Women’s Open sponsored by the Brands of Ebonite International will be held from June 24-30, 2011 and is open to all female youth and adults.

The tournament will take place during the 2011 International Bowl Expo which will draw more than 8,000 attendees from the bowling industry. Qualifying runs from June 24-29 at AMF Euless Lanes and the finals will be staged at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

This will mark the first time in the history of the sport that a women's major professional bowling event will be held in a traditional sporting venue. The finals will be broadcast live on the stadium's famed 60-yard high definition video board.

Judy Gurney takes home Golden Ladies Classic title

Judy Gurney of Omaha, Neb, defeated tournament leader Terri Ward of Loveland, Col., 265-194, to take home the 2011 Golden Ladies title and the $2,000 first prize. The 57-year-old systems analyst for an insurance company, a former Women's International Bowling Congress doubles champion, topped a field of 84 women - all over the age of 50 - in the 21st edition of the scratch bowling event for ladies held annually at The Orleans Casino and Bowling Center in Las Vegas.

The stepladder finals for the top five bowlers began with Char Hammel of Las Vegas, defeating former Team USA member Luci Sandelin, Tampa, FL, 234-205. Sandelin hit her ankle so hard in her third frame delivery that play had to be stopped momentarily to determine if she could continue. Sandelin gamely converted her spare but couldn't regain any momentum.

In match two Hammel defeated qualifying leader Jeanne Naccarato of Tacoma, Wash, 257-214, after Naccarato left a pocket 7-10 in the eighth frame. Naccarato had led the qualifying with a 15 game average of 237.

Hammel looked to having the semifinal match against Gurney well in hand, needing only a mark in the tenth frame to win but a slight error in her downswing caused her to leave the 8-10 split. Gurney s(right) ealed the deal by striking out in the tenth frame to win the match, 247-235.

The championship match pitted Gurney against tournament leader Ward, a first timer in the event who had been steady all through qualifying and match play but the pressure proved to be the undoing of Ward who rolled one of her lower games of the week against Gurney.

For her stellar performance Gurney received $2,000, the trophy, and a free entry into next year's event. Runner-up Ward was awarded $1,150. Third place Hammel received $800, fourth place Naccarato $700, and fifth Sandelin $550.
