The 9th Catalonia Open - Trofeu Galasa was the fifth tournament on the 2011 European Bowling Tour schedule and the second of total seven "Silver" events this season.

The Catalonia Open, which was held from March 15-20, 2011 at 14-laner Bowling Pedralbes in Barcelona, Spain, offered total prize money of 44.700 Euro (approx. US $62,345) with 6.000 Euro going to the winner, 3.000 to the runner-up and 2.000 to the third place finisher.

Since the Viborg International in Viborg, Denmark originally scheduled for July 30-Aug. 7, 2011 has been cancelled, the 2011 European Bowling Tour consists of 21 tour stops in 17 countries including two Platinum, six Gold, seven Silver and six Satellite tournaments.

The top 50 men and the top 50 women in each event receive ranking points. The winner of a Platinum tournament receives 250 ranking points, the winner of a Gold tournament gets 150, the winner of a Silver tournament such as the Catalonia Open earns 100, and the winner of a Satellite tournament gets 50 ranking points.

The top 16 men and the top 16 women at the end of the 2011 season qualify for the 5th EBT Masters to be held at Dream-Bowl Palace in Unterföhring near Munich, Germany on April 30 and May 1, 2012. The event will become the first EBT Masters to be contested on lane condition.

Qualifying ran from Tuesday, March 15 through Saturday, March. 19. Women receive 8 pins handicap each game throughout the entire event, a standard for women on the European Bowling Tour.

A total of 48 players, the top 42 qualifiers including all squad leaders plus the next six women advanced to the finals and carried forward 50 per cent of their respective qualifying total into Final Round One.

Those 48 players bowled four games to cut to the top 24 with the pinfall total being carried forward into Final Round Two. Those 24 determined the top three players for the stepladder finals in another four-game block.

In the semifinal, the No. 3 seed took on No. 2 for the right to bowl the top seeded player for the title and the 6.000 Euro top prize.

Spots in Pan American Games up for grabs for Team USA men next week

When the men of Team USA descend upon the International Training and Research Center next week for their annual training camp, they also will battle for spots in the Pan American Games.
The Pan American Games Trials will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday with the top two players advancing to represent the United States in Guadalajara, Mexico, in October. The Pan American Games are an Americas version of the Olympic Games which includes the Olympic program sports and others that are not part of the Olympics. The United States Olympic Committee has specific requirements for selecting players to compete in the event.

The 11 members of Team USA, made up of the biggest stars in bowling, will compete in four eight-game blocks over two days. Total pinfall will determine finishing position, which will assign points to each player that makes up 60 percent of the Pan American Games Trials.

The other 40 percent of the equation is based on how each player finished at the United States Bowling Congress Masters and the Lumber Liquidators U.S. Open this year.

The players are ranked in order of finish with the highest Team USA finisher in each event earning 11 points, second gets 10 and so on. If a player did not compete in an event, they get the same amount of points as the final finisher.

With the Masters and U.S. Open completed, Tommy Jones (pictured right) leads the standings with 880 points (two first-place finishes among Team USA for a total of 22 points multiplied by 40). Chris Barnes is second with 800, while Bill O'Neill and Mike Fagan are tied for third with 640 points each.

In addition to the Pan American Games Trials, the Team USA members will take part in specialized training at the ITRC, which is considered the home of Team USA, throughout the week.

The two representatives in the women's division will be determined based on finishes at the USBC Queens and U.S. Women's Open. The women will bowl their Pan American Games Trials the first week of May.

Unfortunately some misinformation was discriminated regarding who can and cannot bowl in the BA City Championship – all men and women who certify with the BA side (Ocala is a non-merged association) can participate in the BA City Championship Tournament. Apologies to the women who wished to participate and were misinformed – please try again next year and we look forward to you participating.

Congratulations to Vito Sisto on rolling his 5th certified 300 game (he also has 2 300 games rolled in a post bowl situation which are not honored by USBC) – could he set a record for the most 300 games rolled by a youth bowler? Time will tell.

It’s been busy times for the City bowlers

THOSE bowlers who have remained in contention for the clubs major singles championships have been go, go go to complete their remaining round games, quarter finals and semi finals.
Bill Anderson account for past champion Tim Kearney 31-12 after it stood at 8-all after nine ends but from this point Anderson dominated.

Bob Ritchie prevailed over Whyte Ng 31-29 after a titanic struggle where the scores were level than five times before Ritchie scored three on the 34th end.

In a spectacular game where high quality bowls were the order of the day Cec McAndrew prevailed over last year’s champion Les Barnes 31-2.

A further round game saw Mike Johnson account for Geoff Brooks 31-15 after the scores were level 14-all after 16 ends.

From here Johnson showed why he is a highly regarded bowler within the district, showing all the shots and playing them with precision.

Another game saw Brian Conran have a good win over Frank Mierczak 31-17.

Conran then backed up again in the afternoon to record another great victory over Peter Kearney 31-12, showing why he has become the nominal favourite for the championship with great all round displays.

Another great game saw Ken Poppett and Peter Rutherford do battle over 35 ends before Poppett prevailed 31-22.

Poppett also had to play again in the afternoon and took on Bill Anderson.

This was the game of the round, lasting 40 ends before Poppett, using his vast experience of many years, finally walking off the green an exhausted 31-24 victor.

The score does not show a true indication of the game, as both players showed outstanding precision bowls.

The last game of the round saw Athol Roach and Allan Kenniff meet in a very high quality game in which both players showed good skills.

This game was a tight tussle throughout before Roach finally gained a break to emerge victorious 31-24.

Kenniff is a young bowler going places and with the experienced gained in these championships will prove a great adversary for whichever bowler he meets in future championships.

The quarter finals saw Mike Johnson take on the giant killing Cec McAndrew.

In this game Johnson set up an early lead, and with great all round bowling did not let McAndrew settle before running out an easy 32-17 victor.

Another quarter final saw last year’s runner up and past champion and twice district singles champion Paul Willcox take on the improving Athol Roach.

This was a titanic battle for the first 15 ends where the scores stood at 12-all before the more consistent Roach finally gained a winning break to run out a very relieved 31-20 victor.

The quarter final that was to be played between Brian Conran and Ken Poppett saw Conran advance when Poppett had to forfeit due to family commitments because of those unfortunate circumstances.

Conran proceeded to the semi finals where he met the winner of the match between Bob Ritchie and Kerry Clarke.

This match saw Clarke gain the early ascendancy to setting up a match winning lead 22-12 by the 20th end.

Try as he might and fighting sickness Ritchie could not stem the tide, with Clarke running out victorious 31-22.

The semi final between Conran and Clarke saw both bowlers play outstanding bowls but it was Conran playing great draw bowls who set up an early lead.

Conran continued to dominate play closing out the match 31-16 on the 29th end to proceed into the final.

Conran is a new acquisition to the club and what a great asset for Lithgow City.

Troy captures its first bowling championship

It wasn’t quick or easy but the Trojans did what they set out to do – win a state championship.
It took five games for Troy to top Wapakoneta and claim its first title at the boys state bowling championship at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl on Saturday. Troy took the first game, 206-201, and won every other game in the best-of-five final match.
In their first round Troy went five games against Perry Massillon including a roll-off.
Troy got off to a good start Saturday. Sparked by strong individual performances by sophomore A.J. Bigelow and junior Jared Sierra, who were fifth and seventh, respectively, in the individual standings, the Trojans were third after qualifying rounds. Wapakoneta and Fairmont were first and second.
Troy placed fourth in the girls state tourney Friday.
Solo success: His 674 was the second highest series among all of the bowlers in the competitive tournament field but it was little consolation to Fairmont bowler Ryan Wolfe.
“Yea, it’s an accomplishment for me but this is a team sport and I wanted us to do well as a team,” the Firebirds junior said.
Fairmont was second after the Baker qualifying rounds, but quickly bowed out in match play, losing in three straight games to Struthers and placing fifth.
“We beat ourselves,” Ryan said. “We averaged 214 in Baker qualifying and we couldn’t do better than the 170s in match play.”
While the sting of the Firebirds state performance is still fresh, head coach Rex Wolfe thinks it will be a learning experience for the Fairmont team that will lose only one bowler to graduation.
“I tell the boys, ‘Let this one burn and then learn and move on,’ ” Wolfe said.
Air time: SportsTime Ohio will broadcast the OHSAA Bowling Championships on tape delay on Monday, March 7, at 7:30 p.m.

Colonie boys and girls teams win state championships

Colonie High School won both the boys and girls New York State Public High School Athletic Association team championships today at Strike ’n Spare Lanes in Syracuse.

The Garnet Raiders won the boys’ championship with a 5,944 total. On the girls’ side, Colonie finished with a pinfall of 5,576 to best Union-Endicott, which had 5,350.

Colonie was led by Tyler Mochrie’s six-game total of 1,191. He had a high game of 214 in the morning session and another 214 in the afternoon. Matt Olson (1,177) had a high game of 227 for the Garnet Raiders. Justin Carl was next with a 261-1,140, and John Shaw had a 210-1,113.

Seaman girls win first state bowling title

Seaman coach Geoff Poston sat by himself at the south end of Northrock Lanes on Thursday morning, nervously fiddling with a cell phone.

The Vikings’ girls bowling team opted for group therapy, huddling and holding hands as team scores from the Class 5-1A state meet were read over the public-address system in ascending order.

When eighth through second places were announced with no mention of Seaman, junior Alexis Hackler closed her eyes tight and squeezed two teammates’ hands tightly to launch her celebration. With a three-game team pinfall total of 2,423, the Vikings edged Buhler by eight pins to capture their first state bowling title.

Hackler’s 643 series, highlighted by a team-best 243 in the second game, set the pace for Seaman. With a new postseason scoring format in place in which the top four individual scores from a team counted in each game, Seaman sandwiched Game 1 and 3 scores of 796 around an 831 in the middle game.

Hackler finished fourth individually. Senior Shelby Shaw (621), a ninth-place finisher, and junior Courtney Bigger (576), who was 15th, also earned individual medals.

“Our parents started adding it up, and we knew it was really close,” Hackler said. “We got really nervous there toward the end right before they announced the scores.”

With Centennial League and regional champion Shawnee Heights experiencing a rare off day in defense of its 2010 team title, Seaman capitalized. The Vikings were in fourth place — 63 pins behind leader Buhler — after the first game. But behind Hackler’s 243 and Bigger’s series-best 204, Seaman sliced its deficit to 18 pins heading in to the final game.

“We stressed spares and filling frames,” said Poston, whose entire team finished in the top half of the 72-bowler field. “We told them if you have a bad game, shake it off and someone will pick you up.”

Bowling in the same lanes with Buhler, Seaman competed amid the cheers of a large contingent of Crusader fans throughout the meet. There were plenty of roars in the final game. But with Hackler (227), Shaw (215), Britni Thoman (178) and Katie Brazda (176) contributing, Seaman’s 796 pinfall total in the final game was 26 better than Buhler.

“One thing you really learn to do is block things out,” Shaw said. “You’ve really got to focus when you’re up there, so you just learn not to listen to all of it.”

There was plenty of yelling for Carroll freshman Hollyann Johansen, who won the individual title with a 756 series and led the Eagles to a third-place finish. Johansen rolled a 289 in the second game, opening with 10 consecutive strikes before leaving a 10-pin with her second attempt in the 10th frame. That matched Garden Plain’s Elizabeth May for the tournament’s high game.

Shawnee Heights finished sixth with a 2,216 pinfall score. Junior Jessica Thompson, last year’s individual champion, rolled a 635 series to finish sixth. She was the T-Birds’ lone individual medalist. Junior Kristi Renyer, the 2009 state champion, rolled a 537 and was 26th.

“The girls have had a fantastic year,” Shawnee Heights coach Nick Harris said. “Every now and then, you have one of those days where somebody else has a better day.

“Congratulations to Topeka Seaman. When I’ve said our league is one of the better ones In the state, I meant it. And that held true today.”

Topeka West junior Rachel Barber, who won last week’s regional meet, finished 21st with a 553 series.
